When Euryale woke, she found herself on the sleeping support. Her face rested on Striveâs chest. His big arms were wrapped securely around her. She felt rested and relaxed and safe.
Because she was with her cyborg.
His kind didnât sleep. And he had numerous tasks to complete before they abandoned the planet.
Yet he had stayed with her.
That meant the universe to her.
Guilt then jabbed her in the heart. She had to warn him being with her came with a cost, one he might not be willing to pay.
She braced herself for his rejection and blurted âEveryone Iâve ever known has died. Except for Adam.â And that was only because the deity was immortal.
Iâm also all powerful. Adam prided himself on that descriptor.
And all powerful. Euryale silently amended her thought.
âNot everyone has died.â Strive pushed back on her statement. âYou met Grin and his female, and theyâre alive.â He pointed out those two exceptions.
âTheyâre currently alive.â She propped her chin on her cyborgâs chest and frowned up at him.
His eyes sparkled. He wasnât taking the threat seriously.
She swallowed her aggravation. âAnd Grin and Mohini nearly died moments after meeting me.â
The chambers had flooded, and all three of them had almost drowned.
âThey didnât die.â Strive bracketed her face with his huge hands. âAnd I wonât die either. Cyborgs are tough.â
âCyborgs can die.â She didnât meet his gaze. Heâd see her distress and then, heâd know she cared for him. She wasnât ready for that discussion. âThe Humanoid Alliance killed thousands of your brethren.â
âThey killed millions of the earlier models.â He didnât ease her fears with that correction. âI could die. But I wonât. My role is to safeguard you, and I canât do that if Iâm dead.â
That logic made no damn sense.
No one could stay alive merely by wishing that to happen.
And no one, with the exception of Adam and, for now, Grin and Mohini, had survived meeting her. She was cursed.
âIf I was a better being, Iâd tell you to go away.â But she wasnât a better being. She selfishly wanted her cyborg to stay with her forever.
âIâm not leaving your side.â Strive tapped his right index finger against her bottom lip. âEver. You are my muse.â His eyes shone. âAnd a creative being such as myself canât function without his muse.â
âHhhmmmâ¦â That sounded like a steaming pile of bovine shit.
He gazed at her for a moment.
âI also canât 100.0000 percent predict how Adam would react to us separating.â He added that more-solid reason to stay with her.
I wonât allow the two of you to separate. Adam took that decision away from them. Iâm stronger when youâre together.
Euryale felt stronger when she was with Strive also. âThe other cyborgs, the ones who died, didnât have an all-powerful entity protecting them.â
Having Adam safeguarding them could make the difference. Strive might survive.
Iâm protecting the two of you from the other deities, not from the universe. The entity she was counting on to safeguard them was determined to be an ass.
âI wonât need protection.â Strive flipped her onto her back.
