When Euryale woke, she found herself on the sleeping support. Her face rested on Strive’s chest. His big arms were wrapped securely around her. She felt rested and relaxed and safe.

Because she was with her cyborg.

His kind didn’t sleep. And he had numerous tasks to complete before they abandoned the planet.

Yet he had stayed with her.

That meant the universe to her.

Guilt then jabbed her in the heart. She had to warn him being with her came with a cost, one he might not be willing to pay.

She braced herself for his rejection and blurted “Everyone I’ve ever known has died. Except for Adam.” And that was only because the deity was immortal.

I’m also all powerful. Adam prided himself on that descriptor.

And all powerful. Euryale silently amended her thought.

“Not everyone has died.” Strive pushed back on her statement. “You met Grin and his female, and they’re alive.” He pointed out those two exceptions.

“They’re currently alive.” She propped her chin on her cyborg’s chest and frowned up at him.

His eyes sparkled. He wasn’t taking the threat seriously.

She swallowed her aggravation. “And Grin and Mohini nearly died moments after meeting me.”

The chambers had flooded, and all three of them had almost drowned.

“They didn’t die.” Strive bracketed her face with his huge hands. “And I won’t die either. Cyborgs are tough.”

“Cyborgs can die.” She didn’t meet his gaze. He’d see her distress and then, he’d know she cared for him. She wasn’t ready for that discussion. “The Humanoid Alliance killed thousands of your brethren.”

“They killed millions of the earlier models.” He didn’t ease her fears with that correction. “I could die. But I won’t. My role is to safeguard you, and I can’t do that if I’m dead.”

That logic made no damn sense.

No one could stay alive merely by wishing that to happen.

And no one, with the exception of Adam and, for now, Grin and Mohini, had survived meeting her. She was cursed.

“If I was a better being, I’d tell you to go away.” But she wasn’t a better being. She selfishly wanted her cyborg to stay with her forever.

“I’m not leaving your side.” Strive tapped his right index finger against her bottom lip. “Ever. You are my muse.” His eyes shone. “And a creative being such as myself can’t function without his muse.”

“Hhhmmm…” That sounded like a steaming pile of bovine shit.

He gazed at her for a moment.

“I also can’t 100.0000 percent predict how Adam would react to us separating.” He added that more-solid reason to stay with her.

I won’t allow the two of you to separate. Adam took that decision away from them. I’m stronger when you’re together.

Euryale felt stronger when she was with Strive also. “The other cyborgs, the ones who died, didn’t have an all-powerful entity protecting them.”

Having Adam safeguarding them could make the difference. Strive might survive.

I’m protecting the two of you from the other deities, not from the universe. The entity she was counting on to safeguard them was determined to be an ass.

“I won’t need protection.” Strive flipped her onto her back.
